Wine Country History

Wine Country History:

New Mexico Wine Country, Inc. is a group of family-owned wineries dedicated to the creation of superb handcrafted New Mexico wines. Each winery maintains and operates its own unique wine-making facilities and tasting room. Come taste and experience the Enchantment of our New Mexico Wines.

New Mexico has the distinction of being the oldest commercial wine-growing region in the United States. In 1598, wine was introduced here by the Spaniards. In 1629, a Franciscan monk and a Capuchin monk planted the first grapevines on the east bank of the Rio Grand near present-day Socorro.

By 1880, New Mexico was out producing New York wineries with over 900,000 gallons of wine being shipped east each year. However, from 1890 to 1920, due to overproduction, drought, and Prohibition, winemaking in New Mexico came to an end.

Its revival began in the late 1970s. Today, wine-lovers can visit more than 30 wineries throughout the state. A road trip in any direction from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, or Taos can lead to a winery where you can enjoy tastings and purchase wine by the glass or bottle in a setting at once sophisticated and rustic. New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment, is proud to celebrate its return to winemaking with festivals throughout the year. Plan a day trip to a winery or festival and savor a taste of New Mexico.

New Mexico wineries are now producing award winning wines that are recognized all over the world.
